Kirk Johnson and Beth Ellis of Colorado's Denver Museum of Nature
and Science found traces of an early post-dinosaur fossil forest when it was
exposed during excavations for an interstate highway at Castle Rock, just
mass extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs. It consisted almost entirely
of diverse fl owering trees adapted to heavy tropical rainfall. Very few of the
species of tree that lived in the Colorado forest can be traced to before the
time of the mass extinction, so this forest really was something new on the
planet.
