Figure 4.7: SearchTogether automatically generates a session summary. This interactive summary pro-
vides quick access to the most relevant content found by group members, as well as providing an overview
of the search that can be exported or shared with others outside of the immediate group of collaborators.
The summary includes a page's title, url, and thumbnail, as well as information about which group mem-
bers have visited and what they thought about the page. By default, only pages that have received at least
one comment or positive rating are included in the summary.
algorithms (e.g., “smart splitting,” which can split results based on similarity to content on each user's
computer ( Morris et al. , 2008 )), and greater familiarity with the collaborative search paradigm will
change the perceived benefit of such features.
4.2
CO-LOCATED COLLABORATION
There are many situations in which users with shared information needs are co-located. Such sit-
uations may be planned (e.g., students working together in the library or co-workers meeting in
a conference room) or spontaneous (e.g., friends gathering in a café or family members relaxing
in their living room). Amershi and Morris ( 2009 ) conducted diary studies describing incidents of
