The rooms are as minimal and chic as one would
expect from Putman, featuring white bed linen, ash
furniture, aubergine taffeta drapes and blue-stained
parquet. Interesting extras include suites with sliding
panels that allow the bathroom to become part of the
bedroom (some rooms only have showers), state-of-
the-art plasma TV/DVDs and a free mini-bar complete
with trendy mini-bottles of Pop champagne. Take
advantage of the freebies before heading to Pershing
Lounge, the upper-level bar/club where the subdued
neon lighting, see-and-be-seen balcony area and
dove-grey leather sofas all contribute to make this
spot a favourite with Paris's party people. One of the
capital's hottest places to do drinks, the Lounge has
a different DJ every night of the week, occasional
funky-jazz concerts, upscale ladies' nights complete
with speed-dating sessions and tarot-card readings,
and an ever hip-and-happy vibe. Expensive
Even if you do not usually opt for up-market accommo-
dation, Pershing Hall, the city's hippest hotel, is really
worth the splurge. An unremarkable façade with a
small sign conceals a super-sleek haven created by
design maven Andrée Putman. The lobby sets the off-
beat, modish tone, with fashion photographs, a
bizarre tree-trunk sculpture “growing” from a pool in
the centre of the room and staff who look as if they're
filling in on their day off from the catwalk. A cascade
of beaded curtains leads to the interior courtyard
restaurant where le beau monde drink in the amazing
vista along with their Bollinger; the entire back wall
of the courtyard is covered with a stunning vertical
garden. And in summer, the glass roof retracts so
that guests can top up their (real) St-Tropez tans.
