Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette (as well as other vic-
tims of the guillotine) were originally buried on this
spot, which prompted Louis XVIII to build a chapel in
1815 in their memory. Rest on a bench under 100-year-
old trees or peruse the huge stone tombs of the Swiss
Guards who died defending the luckless Louis XVI.

Cliffs and gushing waterfalls give this former rubbish
tip and quarry an untamed alpine look. But it's all
man-made, from the lake and cave complete with
stalactites, to the Temple of Sybil, from which you can
survey urban Paris - including the distinctive outline
of the Sacré Coeur in the distance.
