The pick ofMontmartre's bistros, full ofcharm and
character. Lovers, clubbers, transvestites and visitors
all squeeze in for a rowdy time, nodding along to
one ofthe requent Sunday-night jazz concerts or
shouting over loud techno, all the while getting through
carafe after carafe of whatever is on special that day.

China Club se ductive cocktail joint
50 rue Charenton, 12ème • 01 43 43 82 02
www.chinaclub.cc Open to 2am daily
A very sexy take on a colonial-era gentleman's club,
with giant ceiling fans, deep Chesterfields, excellent
cocktails (the martinis are superb) and a low buzz of
civilized conversation pervading the ground floor.
Upstairs, the fumoir offers a more romantic setting,
while in the jazz cellar there's live music on weekends.
18 E2
La Fabrique cool, pre-club bar
53 rue du Faubourg St-Antoine, 11ème • 01 43 14 32 32
Open to 5am Mon-Sat
La Fabrique's weird and wonderful combination of
micro-brasserie, eatery and pre-club haunt hosting hot
DJs is so successful that they've exported the concept
and opened up in Tokyo. It's easy to see why, too: if
you're looking for a quick drink, a good feed or a
thumping set by an up-and-coming DJ, you can find it
here. It's always worth checking listings, as special
events (usually on weekends) abound - La Fabrique
even lured Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker to do a set on
the decks once. The music programme varies but is
generally focused on up-to-the-minute electro, except
for Sunday afternoons, when slinky jazz eases
brunchers' hangovers. Don't miss their home-brewed
beer (though real-ale enthusiasts need not apply),
while the large selection ofbottled beers rom around
the globe should fill any gaps for hard-core hops
fans. There's a happy hour daily from 6 to 8pm.
