Shipped over brick-by-brick from Japan in 1895, this
striking pagoda, complete with an ornamental Japanese
garden, became a cinema in the 1930s. Jean Cocteau
chose it for the premiere of his Le Testament d'Orphée
in 1959. Now classified a historical monument, it has
two screens and shows recent independent films.

This centre archives films, documentaries, adverts
and newsreels - anything connected with Paris.
Visitors can search the database of some 6,500 films
(from Lumière brothers shorts to Superman II ) to
watch on a personal screen. The cinema also screens

This tiny Marais café-théâtre organizes a prolific
programme of one- and two-man comedy shows. From
packed rows of slightly uncomfortable benches, spec-
tators watch impromptu sketches, humour-spiced
songs and surreal musical acts. Several shows a day
are held during the popular summer Festival d'Humour.

Duc des Lombards hot jazz

Since opening in 1985, this respected jazz club has
picked up several industry awards and maintained its
ultra-cool reputation by attracting some of Europe's
biggest names. Music ranges from free jazz to hard
bop, and artists who have jammed here include
trumpeter Eric Truffaz and bassist Henri Texier.
