After years of struggle, this huge artists community
has won the right to stay in the old refrigerated
warehouses of the SNCF. Call for details of the
twice-yearly official open days, usually organized
in May and September. Otherwise, impromptu
individual visits are usually permitted.

Louise Weiss Galleries art central
The vibrant art scene on rue Louise Weiss has not
looked back since 1997, when a project was hatched to
group a number of galleries (mostly open 11-7
Tue- Sat) on this small street in the developing 13th
arrondissement. Try Galerie Praz-Delavallade
(www.praz-delavallade.com, at No. 28), with its focus
on US artists, or Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin (at No.
30), a showcase for European and Japanese talent.

These wildly eclectic residences were built from
1925, and still house foreign university students.
The Asian and Armenian colleges follow their
respective national architecture; the Swiss (by Le
Corbusier) and Dutch (by Willem Dudok) express
these notable architects individual styles.

Manufacture des Gobelins tapestries

Visits Tue-Thu at 2pm & 2:45pm
Founded in 1662 to supply Louis XIV with royal furn-
ishings, the Gobelins factory still uses 17th-century
techniques to produce tapestries that are now hung
in state buildings and embassies. Conducted in
French, guided visits take in the factory, the Beauvais
tapestry and Savonnerie carpet workshops. Adm
