modified colors. These colors can be based on those in a library or mea-
sured from the Eye-One Pro Spectrophotometer. The Navigate tool allows
a user to select and create a variation of this color based on a range of 2,
5, or 10 deltaE. Drag and drop a color into this tool and Eye-One Share
produces very subtle differences in the original color or tone based upon
the deltaE variation requested. This is a useful tool to train someone in
just how subtle a deltaE value of 2 is compared to 10.
The Color Collection tool allows the user to load up to three colors,
after which Eye-One Share will produce up to 100 mixes of the three
(see Fig. 8-21). The Shade tool works in a similar fashion, but affects only
the density or saturation (chroma) of selected colors, once again, creat-
ing new solid colors based upon an original color selected or measured.
A cool feature within Eye-One Share is the minimize button, which
shrinks the whole application to the working palette bar from which
the user can simply drag and drop colors into an open application like
Photoshop.
Evaluate
The Evaluate tool is used to examine colors and provide some useful ana-
lytical feedback. With the Accuracy tool, you could measure a color with
the Eye-One Pro Spectrophotometer and then load the closest Pantone
color from the color library and Eye-One Share will calculate the deltaE
of the two. This would give you an idea how far off the two really are
from each other. The LAB values are also provided for both colors, allow-
ing you to have the specific recipe of the measured color or the color
taken from a library. In Fig. 8-22 I've measured a color and compared it
to one in an existing library. You can see the deltaE is very high (33.2),
so much that the two colors are visibly different in the center of the inter-
face. To the left is the plot of the two colors seen on a 2D CIELAB diagram.
I can alter that plot to display the colors in a CIELuv or CIE xyY. To the
right, the spectral curves of the two colors are plotted. This is a useful
tool, teaching about how colors appear in various device-independent
color models.
The Browse tool is also educational. This tool allows you to slice
through the colors using a slider that controls the position of the sec-
ondary axis of the entire color space being displayed. The Light tool is the
most useful of the Evaluate tools for photographers since it provides
information about measured ambient and strobe lighting measured from
the Eye-One Pro Spectrophotometer. As seen in Fig. 8-23, I have loaded
the supplied D50 light measurement into the left light bulb icon and the
F2(CWF) light into the right light bulb icon. CWF stands for Cool White
Fluorescent, and you can see that Eye-One Share shows the color tem-
perature at 4221K and the luminance at 999 Lux. The spectral distribu-
tion of this light is displayed in red and you can see how spiky the graph
appears across the spectrum. Notice that the CRI index is low at a value
