The ColorSync
utility when set to the
Device pane is seen here
on the left. I've selected
the display profile for
my Powerbook
(ARsPBOptix.ICC ), which
updates the Display
Control Panel seen to the
right.
Filters
This section of the ColorSync utility might be considered pretty darn cool
or somewhat worthless, depending on whom you ask. Quartz filters can
be created and used in the print process to produce specific effects on
images. Think of Quartz filters as small files that can be used to process
images for a certain effect like a sepia tone, conversion to B&W, or even
to reduce the size of an image or produce PDF/X-3 documents. Figure
8-7 shows two views of this portion of the utility. To the upper left is the
main panel where some supplied Quartz filters are located (and locked).
To the lower right is the dialog that appears when the user clicks the
View
File with Filter
button and loads an image. This new window is like an
image editor whereby you can pick a Quartz filter to be applied to the
image and save those edits to that existing file. This window is useful for
seeing the effects on an image.
Quartz filters are most useful when used in a print driver. Notice in
Fig. 8-7 that I've created a custom Quartz filter called
ARsHueSat
. Notice
the image editing sliders that appear when I select
Custom
from the
Inter-
mediate Transform
pop-up menu seen below the
Details
and
History
buttons.
Here I can alter tone, color, and saturation using sliders and save this as
a Quartz filter. These filters can be applied in most print drivers under
