very effective and allows for very minute editing and control due to these
multiple adjustment layers. The other major benefit of ColorFlow Custom
Color Tools is I can edit either the soft proof or output tables independ-
ently. I can edit one or all of the rendering intents. Custom Color can
edit input, monitor and output profiles so it's quite flexible. Once an
image has been edited, I simply select the
Custom Color Profile Export
menu
item, which calls up a standard
Save
dialog where I can save the new
edited profile. Note that Custom Color ICC is able to create Device Link
Profiles (see Chapter 7) as well as edit profiles.
GretagMacbeth's ProfileEditor
GretagMacbeth's ProfileEditor is a full-fledged stand-alone product that
has most of the bells and whistles users expect in a profile editor. It has
the steep learning curve as well. Individual tables in the profile can be
edited. Users have the ability to move sliders to affect brightness, con-
trast, and saturation, and full control over curves and the all-important
selective color edits. Initially, the way in which selective color edits are
applied might seem a bit odd. Once you get the hang of the toolset, very
precise selections of color range can be produced. As seen in Fig. 6-34,
you use an eyedropper to sample a color, and by turning on a check box
named
Range Preview
. A color overlay (a mask) shows the areas of color
that will be selected and edited.
The LCH sliders allow this range to be increased or decreased using
luminance (how light or dark the selection), chroma (the saturation of
the color), and hue. I like LCH controls because they provide a great deal
of control. If a red color is very saturated but dark, I can target this range
precisely due to having individual control over LCH parameters. Once
