predominate types of files they end up creating is a mix of vector graphics
and bitmap graphics . Vector graphic files are mathematical descriptions of
a shape such as a font or logo. Applications like QuarkXPress, InDesign,
and Illustrator produce elements of vector data along with images, which
are bitmap data.
A bitmap is an image file composed of 1 bit pixels. Pixels in a bitmap
are either on or off. This is how Photoshop handles image data, as a
bitmap. At some point vector data, which is a mathematical description
and not composed of pixels, needs to become a bitmap so that a printer
can produce a dot to reproduce the shape. The process of converting the
vector math into a bitmap is known as rasterizing . A RIP is a printer driver
that can take both bitmap data and vector data and create a page of dots
so we can output a document. Most of the desktop photo printer drivers
are not RIPs. The Quickdraw and GDI drivers discussed know how to
