Targets
Once we decide upon the color model of the target file, the next option
is choosing the number of patches to output and measure with a Spec-
trophotometer. Some software packages provide one or two options,
whereas others provide a myriad of possibilities, including the ability to
build custom targets. There are a few standardized CMYK targets such as
the IT8.7-3 or ECI2002 as seen in Figs. 6-12 and 6-13. These are both
excellent targets for building CMYK profiles, however I would recom-
mend using the ECI2002 target if supported. This target is recommended
by the ECI (European Color Initiative). The ECI2002 contains all of the
928 patches found on the IT8.7-3 target in addition to other patches to
total 1485. The extra patches are an advantage when profiling nonlinear
CMKY output devices.
This target often is seen in two forms: visual and scrambled. In
Fig. 6-14 you see a scrambled ECI2002 target; the differences between it
and the visual target are obvious. The scrambled target is preferable
for devices that are not as linear or well behaved. Scrambling the patches
over the target allows for a representative average of the page to be
measured. This scrambled effect is seen in other kinds of targets besides
Fig. 6-12 IT8.7-3 target for building CMYK printer profiles.
