Fig. 4-4 The FlexColor
software that drives the
line of Imacon scanners
and cameras is fully ICC
aware. In the ColorSync
tab, I can tell the software
what input profile to use,
and which working space
or even print/output space
to convert that data into if
so desired. I can tell the
software to embed the ICC
profile into the resulting
TIFF file.
Notice that in Fig. 4-4, there is a preference pane named ColorSync
that allows me to load the ICC profile I made for my scanner as well as
any ICC profile I have on my system. In this example, I have told
FlexColor I wish to scan using the input profile (ARs 848 Gamma 3) into
Adobe RGB (1998). I can scan into a print/output space although this
isn't a recommended Pipeline. I can continue to use all the tools in the
FlexColor software such as curves or levels and even selective color to alter
the soft proof and match this color appearance once the scan is complete
and opened in Photoshop. The software will use the profiles selected as
well as detect the display profile to produce an accurate soft proof. This
is the ideal way to deal with scanning data using ICC profiles and color
management.
Conversions from the scanner profile into a working space (or output
space) using a scanner driver are conducted much as they are in Photo-
shop using the Convert to Profile command. However we do not have the
ACE CMM, Black Point Compensation, or dither options since this is
available only in Photoshop. We can scan the data without converting to
a working space. This provides all the data and full color gamut this
scanner is capable of producing. The scan can be opened in Photoshop
for further conversions. Since FlexColor embeds the scanner profile in the
final document I can convert the data into any working space when I
open it in Photoshop. Optionally, I can color correct in the scanner driver
or Photoshop or both. I can scan in 8-bits per color or high-bit (more
than 8-bits per color). This allows a great deal of flexibility in the scan-
ning pipeline. Scanners are fairly consistent devices so unless the light
