TDF. When you receive an IT8 target, the TDF that matches it should also
be provided. If you have more than one TDF, you want to ensure that
when the time comes to load this data into the profiling software, you
match the target and TDF correctly. If you lose the TDF, you will need to
locate a copy. Many companies have their TDF files on their web sites.
You want to take very good care of the target since if it ages, fades, or
gets damaged in any way, the resulting profile quality will suffer.
There is a newer, far superior, and admittedly, more expensive target
made by color geek Don Hutcheson. This hand-measured target is known
as the HCT (Hutcheson Color Target). It was designed and built from the
ground up for building excellent scanner profiles. The HCT target has
twice as many patches as the standard IT8 and is available in several film
types and formats (see http://hutchcolor.com/hct.htm). This is an expen-
sive product compared to the cost of a batch measured IT8 and thus may
be appropriate for higher-end scanners. However, there is no reason not
to use the HCT for any film or reflective scanner if the budget permits.
