In-Depth Information
a few years before, the number may have been even higher. Some
of the oldest windmills in the earlier statistics from 1907 had
surely also been scrapped during the period and replaced by new
industrially produced “wind motors”. Wind power was also used for
electricity production, waterworks and land reclamation projects
and the numbers of windmills in these sectors were of course
not included in the statistics. A fair estimate could then be that
during the first two decades of the 20th century, at least 15 000 to
18 000 windmills (or a yearly average of 750 to 900) were produced
and erected in Denmark.

The exhibitions of machinery in connection with many local
and regional cattle shows were used for marketing of the
windmills. On this photo there are 5-bladed windmills with
adjustable vanes from two diferent producers and a number
of small pumping windmills with fixed blades from various
producers (Photo in the Danish weekly
Illustreret Tidende
1908).
