DVES played an important role for the use of electricity in rural
areas and small towns. In 1906, the first two cooperatively owned
power plants using wind power were built in towns in western
Jutland. However it was soon evident that wind power could not
economically compete with combustion engines. Already in 1908,
power stations without wind power dominated the list of 19
plants, planned by DVES that year. The activities at DVES continued
until 1916, but wind power was only an important part of them
during the first few years. With the scarcity of imported fuels
during the First World War (1914-1918), many small power stations
