Sørensen's conical wind motor was an early example of the
industrial windmill type with adjustable vanes, which later on
were one of the Danish “standard types” (Photo: The Danish

During the 1890s, several other producers entered the market.
In these years wind power was not only attractive for farm use, but
was also still used in many workshops in towns, where electricity
was not yet introduced. It is difficult to find valid statistics covering
this sector, but from national agricultural statistics it is known
that 4 600 Danish farms had windmills in 1907. The major part
of these was surely built locally by traditional millwrights, but at
least a few hundred of them must have been industrially produced
“wind motors” [2].
3.2
The Pioneer Work of Poul la Cour:
1891-1902
The internationally most renowned Danish wind power pioneer
from this period, Poul la Cour (1846-1908), had a university
degree in physics and meteorology. In 1872, he became employed
