Lessons from California
In 1985, Preben Maegaard from the Folkecenter asked Smiley to help
organise and lead a tour of 1 Danish wind turbine manufacturer
representatives to visit the California wind industry and to attend
the American Wind Energy Conference in San Francisco. They
travelled in two large vans from San Diego, continuing on to Palm
Springs, Tehachapi, Pacheco Pass, up to the Altamont and San
Francisco, visiting every wind farm/project developer possible.
The group included leaders from many of the early Danish wind-
mill companies, who played important roles in furthering the
technology; including Wincon, Wind World, Vind-Syssel, Danwin
and Lolland.
The most interesting aspect of the tour was the intense
investigations of the windmill junk yards. At first it was odd to spend
so much time looking at broken windmills and parts, but then they
began to appreciate that seeing how things broke was as important,
or even more important, than seeing what worked. Nowhere in the
world could one find so many broken experiments.
