Figure 22.8
“Preservation of the Oceans” by Jürgen Claus: (a) seahorse; (b)
cephalopod; (c) radiolarian.
The motif “The Tree of Life”, chosen by Franz Kießlich, was
a merging of two cultures—a visual transformation of willow, the
typical northern German tree, with the typical African woodcut
art. An African sculpture “Tree of Life” is a carved figurative group
from a piece of sandalwood or blackwood. The willow knots,
distorted hands, at the top end of the artwork signified STOP, STOP
with the crazy waste of energy. A special feature of this design is
the colouring in four segments following the four seasons: winter,
spring, summer and autumn. Local children decided on the
placement according to the compass.
