It allowed to reduce frequency deviations by 80% in these island
configurations and was demonstrated in the 10 kVA plant in our
machine laboratory.

The wind/battery/diesel system was built by MAN, VARTA
together with SMA's power conditioning and battery container.
With its microprocessor-based energy management as a core
component, it was finally shipped to the Irish island of Cape
Clear. Together with representatives of the companies involved,
the Irish utility and the local authorities, we held a two days
seminar, when this European funded pioneer island wind-power
demonstration system was inaugurated. Representatives of the
THERMIE programme of the European Commission's Directorate
General for Energy were there, among them my friend Komninos
Diamantares, who should later become my colleague in Wolfgang
Palz's renewable energy research programmes.
It was a cold, yet sunny day with little wind, mildened by the
gulfstream which allowed even palms to grow here on this island,
only accessible by ship. Between a handful of houses, nearly everybody
went by foot, and now the Irish Minister flew in by helicopter
with some press people for the open air inauguration ceremony
directly at the power container on Cape Clear Island.
