It was in 1980 when I first came in touch with a completely new
field in systems and control engineering: using micro-electronics
for control, integrated circuits, which at that time had recently
developed into the first 4 bit and soon 8 bit, the so-called
microprocessors. Up to then, digital signal processing and control
used to be a field for expensive mainframe and mini-computers,
controlling large installations for processing, manufacturing and
production installations or military, air and space equipment.
