Prototypes and Beyond
The wind researcher team from Saarbrücken worked continuously
since 1990 on studies for Siemens and Thyssen, comparing the
two diferent drive train concepts. The department of hydropower
generators at Siemens in Erlangen in cooperation with the
Saarbrücken research group, initiated a development of a prototype
of a 750 kW DD generator with inverter. Siemens ofered the whole
package for DM 690 000 (ca. EUR 345 000) to Danish wind turbine
producers, but they kindly refused due to the high price.
When the Enercon E40 became popular already in 1995, a
Frankfurt based banker Manfred Hecht put Klinger´s research
group in charge of designing a new gearless 600 kW system. By
that time Hecht had built up a Fund (WONSEI, West-Ost-Nord-Süd-
Ethische-Investition) with about DM 5 million. Together with Ciro
Capricano, who just completed his study of technical physics at
the University of Applied Sciences in Wiesbaden, and was working
as the leading engineer in the wind research department, Hecht
was following the development in Saarbrücken carefully. After
nearly two years the prototype of the Genesys project was set up
in the north of Saarland in January 1997 (Fig. 19.8).
