However, wind farm operators have had big problems with
the drive trains ever since wind turbines came into use. The main
problems are the long standstill periods through total standstills,
expensive repairs and time-consuming maintenance work at the
gearbox.

Direct Drive Revolution
DD is a drive train concept that was first successfully introduced
to the market in 1995 by the German manufacturer Enercon,
which replaced the gearbox and the fast-running generator with a
low speed, circular multi-pole generator that was directly connected
to the rotor (Fig. 19.5).
