6 to 10 years). Small wind turbine owners become community
advocates and energy savers, bringing revenues for the benefit of
local economy.
The main benefit of small power installations is the self-
sufficiency for the individual consumer and independence from
national supplies (coming both from renewable energy or fossil
fuels, Denmark has no atomic energy). Small-scale windmills are
visible in landscape—they are installed in close distance to houses
and farms helping to create public awareness.

The Market Potential
There are many types of small-scale windmills ranging from
100 W up till 10 kW, some of them using advanced carbon fibre
blades and permanent magnet generators (PMG). This type of
equipment will have great opportunities for paving the way for
wind energy in the many unserved areas of the world. Of-grid
small windmills are often used in developing countries, mainly for
a wide range of rural energy applications. A new and unexpected
application for small windmills (often self-made) called the Home

has emerged in developed countries, for example, in the
United States. In some countries small windmills are integrated
into architecture, especially in densely built cities.
Small wind power development varies in diferent countries,
due to climate, politics, technology development, market or govern-
mental policies:
China
China has many years of experiences within small wind power, for
of-grid applications for consumers that do not have access to the
national power grid. There is a growing and important development
of a wide-range of wind turbines up to 50 kW, gearless, PMG,
with inverters for grid connection. In the period from 2005 till
2009 there were about 400 000 small wind turbines, produced in
China, installed in the country and 120 000 Chinese wind turbines
exported to other countries.
