In-Depth Information
When Nordex, that became an important international
manufacturer, entered the wind turbine business, their first two
models of 150 and 200 kW were almost identical to the Folke-
center derivative that Dencon launched.
Finally Dencon engineered the first 500 kW turbine in
Denmark, which was sold to Soenderjyllands electricity utilities.
In the design process Dencon obtained a patent of a three-point
mechanical suspension in order to reduce the dynamic load going
through the drive train, a design principle that soon became
industrial standard.
We had financing of the production. In fact I was encouraged
by the local bank to use their services in regards of the production
of turbines, but not for the development of the company, as we
defined it in our business plan. This involved expansions on
the international markets. Due to this limitation unfortunately
we decided to close the business. An overriding factor was the
shipyard's bankruptcy. It was a repair shipyard servicing the fleet
of small freight ships, which numbers were strongly reduced
during the 1980s.
By 2013, Ærø still maintains its pioneering position as a
result of the local initiatives of the 1970s. Phase-out of fossil fuels
and transition to the renewables enjoys the full support among
the industrial and political leaders of the island that is well
safeguarded against damages to the local economy coming from
the high future oil prices.
