turbines though located close to the rough climate on the Baltic
beach, never sufered from gear breakdowns.
Figure 12.4
Dencon wind turbines at the Ærø wind farm.
The wind farm was commissioned in 1985. Biomass utilisation
led to the construction of a heating plant based on straw and
connected to Ærøskøbing district heating network. The plant was
commissioned in 1988. Biogas was abandoned as a solution due
to prohibitive costs of transport of the animal waste products.
The community was awarded a prize for the initiative and
work of the study group. We were happy to see the Ærøskøbing
municipality receive this honour, which helped to open the eyes of
some of the citizens and authorities. Eventually renewable energy
made Ærø internationally known due to its genuine bottom-up
initiatives.

Innovative Concepts
The study group had good relations with the Nordic Folkecenter
for Renewable Energy
and in this regard I was invited, along with
15 others, to join a study tour in California to learn from their
experiences within wind power. The Danish companies were
pioneering in wind turbines and dominated the development.
