Change to renewable energy was the future oriented reaction
to the serious energy situation in the 1970s. Main actions were
taken by a group of involved people from all walks of the local
community: the director of the folk high school, representatives
of the local industries and shipyards, farmers, businessmen,
teachers, politicians and some activists as well. Being an island
community we wanted to consolidate the interest in energy
security, job creation and new local businesses.
The social democratic government by this time supported
such local energy initiatives financially. The local study circle with
its 10 to 15 participants employed two urban planning people
to organise the activities, starting with an analysis of wind and
biomass resources and comparing this with the existing energy
demand.

Denmark's First Wind Farm
Initially this resulted in the construction of Denmark's first wind
farm consisting of 11 units 55 kW Vestas turbines.

The National Steering Committee for Renewable Energy
supported the project financially on the condition that the company
name and logo of the wind turbines should be painted over, and the
gearbox, already then a weak component in commercial windmills,
was up-sized with the positive consequence that the Ærø Vestas
