The first oil crisis of October 1973 triggered many various
activities in the Danish countryside. How was it possible to maintain
the supply of electricity and heating using local resources from
the wind, sun and biomass? This debate happened on the Island of
Ærø as well, located in the southern part of Denmark facing the
Baltic Sea.
12.1
Powerful Island
The Island of Ærø has 7 000 inhabitants living in the two towns
Marstal and Ærøskøbing and in the surrounding rural areas. The
main trades are agriculture and fishery while the shipping sector
provides the basis of shipyards and associated industries. There
are four ferry routes to the mainland. By tradition, the island
has struggled against involvement from the outside and often
demonstrated a strong ability to find its own solutions.
