should do the whole project, including land lease agreement, power
purchase agreement, and building permit, supplying, erecting and
connecting the WTGs, and then selling the project to an investor
who would lease it back to us for management and maintenance,
cashing the money for power sales, and paying the lease to the
investor.
We found an investor for the Tehachapi project—the State
Street Bank in Boston, who agreed to invest USD 50 million on
certain conditions. This investor was targeted by one of the
leading Californian leasing providing companies, D'Accord, in San
Francisco, where we met one of the directors
someone from
Steven's personal network. This leasing company was known
for arranging aircrafts for American Airlines and trains for the
Canadian train company, so we felt that we were in good hands.
D'Accord ofered us an office, computers and consultancy on a no-
cure-no-pay-basis, and we were working there with highly skilled
professionals on preparing this leasing deal for approval by the
potential investor in Boston. (This is in fact where I was receiving
my intensive education in economy, better than four years at school).
When finished, it was mid-December 1987, and I went to
Boston on my way back to Denmark, presenting the project with
all its details to the director of the investment department of the
State Street Bank. I got the approval, on the condition that every-
thing should be finalised latest by 31 December, for tax reasons,
and that their lawyer should approve the insurance conditions. I
hurried back to Denmark and to my Danish insurance company,
who finally agreed with some minor changes demanded by the
American lawyer, but on 0 January. And even if approved, the
deadline was exceeded, and the project was cancelled. This event
was my largest victory and my largest defeat in business ever, and
the feeling of having a USD 50 million order was really great, even
if it lasted for only 20 days.

One thing of which Copenhagen should be proud, is the 20 ofshore
WTGs outside Copenhagen harbour. This project was initiated
by Vind-Syssel in 987. There is a long story behind it. We were
working on feasible foundations, power cables, and investigating the
sea bottom, which was kind of a junkyard. To begin with, we asked
