About the author
is one of the pioneers
of the modern wind industry. In 1976,
Stiesdal built his first small wind
turbine and, in 1978, designed one of
the first commercial wind turbines,
licensed to Vestas in 1979. Stiesdal
worked as a consultant for Vestas until
1986 while simultaneously studying
medicine, physics and biology at the
University of Southern Denmark.
Stiesdal joined Bonus Energy (now
Siemens Wind Power) in 1987 as a design engineer. In 1988 he
was appointed technical manager, and in 2000 chief technology
officer.
During his 25 years with the company, Stiesdal has worked
with all aspects of wind turbine technology. Besides this he has
been engaged with a wide range of other activities, including
sales, manufacturing, project implementation, service and quality
management.
Stiesdal has made more than 160 inventions and has been
awarded more than 200 patents. In 2008 he received the “Siemens
Inventor of the Year” award and in 2010 “Siemens Top Innovator”
award. In 2011 he was awarded the EWEA Poul la Cour Prize.
During 1979-1988, along with his wind turbine work, Stiesdal
studied medicine, physics and biology at Syddansk Universitet
in Odense, Denmark. Henrik Stiesdal, 56, is married and has two
teenage daughters.
