In-Depth Information
About the author
was born in
November 1949 on a family farm at
Hejnsvig in Middle Jutland, Denmark.
His grandparents were Christian
missionaries to Nigeria. At the age of 8
years he saw a fighter jet plane crash
land in front of the family farm. This
inspired him to build model airplanes
for the next decade, and study
aerodynamics. In 1969, after high school, he began studies in
chemical engineering at the Polytechnic High School of Copenhagen.
After four years of studies his growing involvement in the
emerging environmental movement forced him and his later wife
to move back to Jutland to work for greener alternatives instead of
ordinary engineering work. Living near Viborg he worked part-time
as an environmental activist from 1973 in NOAH (Friends of the
Earth), from 1974 in the anti-nuclear organisation OOA and from
1975 in the Renewable Energy Organisation OVE. From 1977 to
1981 he developed and manufactured wind turbine blades for
self-builders and the emerging industry. From 1981 to 1986
Erik entered a license contract with Alternegy and designed the
AeroStar blades, which were produced in Denmark and the United
States and sold to 26 countries. In 1986 he built the independent
blade test facility “The Sparkær Centre”, which was later purchased
by the government-owned institution Risø.
From the year 2000 to 2007 Erik developed a route for
recycling glass fibre and carbon fibre from worn-out wind turbine
blades. Since 2007 he has been with Siemens Wind Power, where
he has been associated with the development of new wind
turbine blades using advanced technology.
