Økær Vind Energi was a small company employing around
13 people at the most. In the beginning it was mostly long haired
“hippie looking” folks. The people I hired in the early years were
mainly left wing activists from a nearby town named Viborg.
Ideologically we were on common grounds, and we deeply felt
that we were struggling together to help build a greener future.

For the first years for Vestas employees, especially white
collars, they may not have felt at ease relying on the delivery of
blades from such a company. For my company it was crucial, that
we had demanding customers. In those early years I had two
main drivers: my bank director, who spurred me to work harder,
as my account was always overdrawn and first and foremost the
demanding customers. Customers, such as self builders, small
companies or bigger companies such as Vestas, Nordtank and
Bonus constantly asked for new and better designs, and bigger
blades. In 1979 Karl Erik Jørgensen of Herborg Vindkraft asked
me to design and manufacture a 7.5 m blade for his new
55 kW turbine. At the same time we were applying for a loan from
a Danish Regional Development Fund for building an improved
and bigger production facility. The development fund made a
