compete with their results: At Tvind they worked together as a
collective, whereas we were individualists working together with
other individualists across the country. Tove convinced me to
mount the plywood airfoil sections on the steel tube for the plug, in
a way so that the Turbine would turn in a clockwise direction.
This discussion and decision of design—taken place around the
kitchen table—accompanied by music of The Rolling Stones and Bob
Dylan, became defining for the direction of rotation for most of the
world's new wind turbines, as our later blade customers: Vestas,
Bonus (now Siemens), Nordtank and Enercon became technology
and market leaders in the international wind power industry at a
crucial time. For some years descendants of the Riisager turbine:
Wind Matic and Tellus—all turning counter clockwise—were seen
in the Danish landscape alongside with turbines from Vestas, Bonus,
Nordtank and other turbines all turning clockwise. Eventually
the three major Danish turbine manufactures conquered not only
the Danish market but to some entent also the international wind
market. As the successful “Danish Concept” was delivered with a
clockwise turning rotor, this direction eventually became the global
standard.
