From NIVE to Master Blacksmiths:
The Follow-Up on La Cour's Tradition
In December 1976, Bjørn Rossing who lived in Vestervig in Thy,
wanted to buy a 22 kW windmill from Christian Riisager. Rossing
already knew from Karsten Fritzner, who lived in the same
municipality, that Fritzner's price was lower than DKK 50 000.
For Rossing, however, the price had gone up to DKK 75 000 (EUR
10 000). Rossing found that it was too costly.
This caused the recently established NIVE group in Thy,
composed of local engineers, farmers, blacksmiths, teachers, and the
author of this narrative, to join forces on a 22 kW windmill project.
We were convinced it could be manufactured at a lower price than
those DKK 75 000. Five sets of prototypes blades, with low tip
speeds similar to Juul's models, were ordered from Økær Vind Energi.
This was the starting signal for the Økær 5 m blade, which was
later used by many producers for their windmill projects.
We had blades, but still a control was lacking. This part of the
project was placed with a member of the group—engineer Finn
Bendix of HM Automatic in Thisted, where he was working with
controls for industries. When the parameters for the controls had
been set, it was a minor task for Bendix to design windmill controls
that would work.
