of the “Danish Concept”
When researching wind energy technology innovation and
design, the term the “Danish Concept” is used frequently. For
some, this may simply mean an upwind turbine
facing into
the wind
with three blades turning around a horizontal-axis.
This definition can be expanded to encompass a number of
other characteristics of early Danish wind turbines such as stall
regulation, a gearbox connected to an induction generator, and
even the fibreglass material for the blades and independent braking
systems. Finally, one may add to the “Danish Concept” not just
subsystem characteristics but overall design principles for the
technology such over-designing for cases of uncertainty and the
use of certain historical precedent from the Gedser wind turbine.

For many, the idea of the “Danish Concept” would invoke images
from single or grouped wind turbines powering rural farms and

While these “design principles” are not explicitly mentioned as part of the
“Danish Concept”, they certainly embody the concept in the abstract.
