In adapting windmills to supply water across the Great
Plains of the United States during the mid-19th century, various
additional innovations were developed including sectional wheels
(or wind rose configurations) as well as the all-metal windmill
and a variety of additional control techniques. The prevalence
of horizontal-axis wind rose windmills in the United States
influenced the design of the first wind turbines in the country.
