In-Depth Information
The zoomed sections of the photos show, that the middle
of the shutters are hinged on the beam and are connected with a
rod parallel to the beam. Earlier the sails were to one side of the
beams. The rods again are connected with strings to a spider-like
device at the rotor centre. From there a string goes through the
hollow rotor shaft to a weight to which gravity decide the tension
of the shutters against the wind.

How to Store Wind Energy
The well-known way of storing electricity in lead/acid batteries
was too expensive at that time. Therefore Poul la Cour chose to
let the direct current separate water into hydrogen and oxygen by
electrolysis. This will produce hydrogen gas at the minus electrode
and oxygen at the positive electrode.

La Cour's electrolysis system (left); Hydrogen tank (right).
The electrolysing vessels were placed in the larger building
besides the mill building as well as two big gas containers in the
ground. From here the two gases were transported through lead
pipes 300 m to the college buildings
where they were used as lighting
gas in lamps made especially for this application.
