The American tradition of windmills utilised many blades.
This type of windmill is very suited for pumping water. These
windmills also influenced the Danish windmill design during the
19th century. Building of the railways provided an opportunity to
use this type of windmill in conjunction with water towers on
railway stations for pumping water for the steam powered loco-
motives.
