to figure out the part of the image in the waveform that is white or black.
This is a similar exercise to what we did with the boxer image in the first
chapter. Once you have identified a section of the waveform that should
be black, you can use various tools in the shadows tonal range to flatten
out the signal in that area. Then do the same with whites. Once you have
balanced the blacks and whites on most images, the midtones will fall into
place naturally or at least be close enough that you can complete the cor-
rection using only your eyes and the video monitor.
Kassner provided another helpful tip to refine this “flattening” tech-
nique of eliminating color casts. His tip is just one more reason to use
