10.8. Experiments
Initially, the simulator enabled us to verify the correct working of our
algorithms. However, we then chose to evaluate the real benefit of our system: we
therefore carried out two laboratory experiments with human subjects; these are
described in [JAC 09].
The first concerns the display of a list of flights in an airport. In this case, several
users are meant to be in the proximity of a single presentation device. The second
reproduces a train station environment, in which each subject must go to the
platform where his train is about to depart. In this case, a single user successively
interacts with several physical presentation devices.
In these experiments, we have not sought to evaluate the multimodal character of
our platform: these aspects were able to be tested thanks to the simulator described
above. The two experiments described below had the objective of evaluating the
real benefit of our system in terms of time necessary for a given task to be
accomplished. In total around 20 subjects participated in these experiments. The
detection of users was carried out with the help of a system of infrared badges
