touch pad is positioned to the right of the driver (in front of the gearbox) and the
visualization screen of the model is positioned at the top in the centre of the
dashboard - the usual position for a navigation screen (see Figure 8.11).
8.6.2. Goals and hypotheses of the experiment
From a general point of view, the stakes of the first phase of model validation are
as follows:
- verify, out of context, the comprehension and quality of sounds of hierarchical
libraries (LIB1 and LIB2);
- verify, in context (simulated driving), the acceptability and efficiency of
sounds;
- gather the opinions of users regarding the different approaches of auditory
guiding.
On this basis, the hypotheses formulated prior to the experiment can be resumed
by the following statements:
- sonification enables navigation tasks to be carried out more rapidly ( H1 );
- sonification limits gaze diversion and enables a better focus on driving ( H2 );
- hierarchical sounds can support better long-term use, from the point of view of
lassitude, than vocal synthesis ( H3 );
- the “museme” withstands better long-term use, from the point of view of
lassitude, than the “hybrid” instance ( H4 ).
8.6.3. Description of the protocol
The experimental evaluation protocol involved the participation of 24 people
(“participants”) equally distributed in gender (11 women, 13 men), aged from 21 to
48 according to a quasi uniform distribution (21-28 years old: 5; 29-34 years old: 8;
35-40 years old: 6; 41-48 years old: 5). All were employees in the field of
automobile industry and have had their driving licence for at least two years. The
test progresses in seven stages (average total length of around 90 minutes):
1. General presentation of the system, progress and evaluation instructions.
2. Free evocation phase on two hierarchical libraries (LIB1 and LIB2). The
experimenter plays the sounds of each library, one after the other; at the end of each
listening phase, the participant voices what the sound means to him and the function
that it could represent.
