Figure 1.1. Identification of four traveler states
The viatic concept materialized through an operational application in the form of
an informational fountain, a prototype that can be seen in Figure 1.2. Intuitively, it
enables the town to be apprehended using just one finger thanks to its tactile screen.
It can be used to search for an address, ask for an itinerary preferentially using
public transport and can suggest services that are in close proximity (libraries,
cinemas and listings, post offices, swimming pools, opening times, etc.). It also
offers information to be used immediately on a big screen that is visible from a
distance.
Once the information has been consulted, the traveler can print it off on thermal
paper as a “receipt” or send it via SMS. He has then got the information and can
carry on with his journey. Viatic provides the traveler with information that will
enable him to “take charge of his time” and will contribute to transforming his
journey into time spent actively and no longer passively.
The informational fountain was used as a case study in an engineering thesis
[BRO 08] led by models applied to the development of personalized human-
machine interfaces. Modeling the user according to his psychological profile, at a
given moment, means that a more relevant interface can be offered [BRO 09] (see
also Chapter 9).
