The
mutual control
mode
uses one of the agents to verify the adequate nature of
the activity of the other. It is translated by the production of critical information by
an agent on the behavior of the other agent. In the context of lateral control, two
mutual control types have been examined: the warning mode, producing an auditory
or haptic critique; and the action suggestion mode, acting more specifically on the
action effector (oriented oscillation of the steering wheel). These modes have been
examined in critical situations close to the lane exit [HOC 06], [NAV 07]. On a
simulator and on the track, the warning mode (nonspecific sound and/or oscillation
of the wheel) proved to be effective. The action suggestion mode proved to be much
more effective than the warning mode on the simulator. This mode acts directly on
the production of the response (at the level of the applied energy), whereas the other
intervened more indirectly in the diagnosis. Nonetheless, the effect of the two
modes is modulated by the level of risk that the driver attributes to the situation
[DER 11]. When the gap at the center of the lane is not very significant, the effect of
assistance is not as great. Thus, the assistance does not produce an irrepressible
response, which leaves the driver free to take action, particularly when an obstacle
must be bypassed and the assistance must not be followed.
The
function delegation
mode,
as its name suggests, consists of sustainably
delegating a function to another agent. Numerous works have been dedicated to the
delegation of longitudinal control in the context of cruise control devices (e.g.
ACC), of which some have shown difficulties with regaining control at the limits of
the validity of the device [YOU 07a]. The ACC not being a collision avoidance
device, it is up to the driver to brake when the obstacle is fixed or if it has a
significant speed differential compared with his own vehicle.
