A Day Out
Morning
Start your tour of Tiergarten
at the Reichstag (see
pp10-11) . Explore the gov-
ernment district from here
starting with the Bundes-
kanzleramt (the Federal
Chancellor's Office, diago-
nally opposite). Stop at
Restaurant Käfer (see
p101) in the Reichstag for
breakfast. Via John-Foster-
Dulles-Allee you will pass
the Carillon and the Haus
der Kulturen der Welt on
the way to Großer Tier-
garten (see p97) . Continue
along one of the paths into
the park, directly opposite
the old Kongresshalle,
until you reach Straße des
17. Juni. If you turn right
here, you will be heading
directly towards Sieges-
säule (see p39) . From
there continue along Fasa-
nerieallee in a southwest-
erly direction until you get
to the Café am Neuen
See (see p101) , where you
could have lunch.

Hansa-Viertel
The Hansa estate west of
Schloss Bellveue was built for
the “Interbau” trade fair in 1957.
World War II bombs had flattened
Tiergarten, and 36 residential
complexes were erected in the
park, designed by distinguished
architects from around the world,
including Walter Gropius (Händel-
allee 3-9), Alvar Aalto (Klopstock-
str. 30-32) and Oscar Niemeyer
(Altonaer Str. 4-14). d Tiergarten,

Villa von der Heydt
The late-Neo-Classical Villa
von der Heydt is one of the few
surviving examples of the archi-
tectural villa style typical of Tier-
garten. It was built in 1860-61,
according to plans by Hermann
Ende and G. A. Linke, for one of
the most elegant residential areas
in Berlin at the time. Since 1980,
the Prussian Heritage Foundation
has had its headquarters here.

Afternoon
A stroll through the Diplo-
mats' Quarter (see p97) :
from Neuer See, it is only
a few steps along Lichten-
steinallee and Thomas-
Dehler-Straße in an easter-
ly direction until you get to
Klingelhöferstraße with its
Scandinavian embassies.
On Tiergartenstraße you
will pass, among others,
the embassies of Japan,
Italy, India and Austria.
From here you could con-
tinue south along Klingel-
höferstraße, making a
small detour for refresh-
ments at Café Einstein
(see p101) . Continue along
Lützowufer until you reach
the Kulturforum (see
pp32-3) via Potsdamer
Brücke. A good place for
an evening meal would be
the Vox (see p101).
