Science is forever moving forward, expanding our understanding of the
universe, and there are now many things that we take for granted that could
not even have been dreamt of by Newton and his contemporaries. Einstein's
theory of general relativity demonstrates that gravitational forces are not only
capable of bending light, but when the gravitational forces are great enough
they can even slow down time. Other theories and a deeper understanding
of motion are constantly being developed that explore the nature of time,
motion, and material. It is remarkable, then, that for our purposes we are still
able to rely on the 17
th
-century findings of Newton.
