In-Depth Information
might also be possible to undertake secondary research by accessing existing
material and information. Indeed, research into remote communities and
cultures or those that have either changed over time and are no longer
represented by the contemporary society or no longer exist may be the only
practical approach in which research can be undertaken.
Ethnographic research is a method that may also be used by people
interested in history, folklore, cultural studies, and the study of linguistics.
It can provide valuable information on the behavior of cultural groups that
might be useful to an animator involved in creating performance-based
animation. It may also be useful for animators who are developing narratives
involving identifiable cultures or groups, particularly if these activities need to
be represented accurately.
Sources
In recent years the Internet has become a valuable resource for research,
providing a fantastic range of reference material, information, and support
for research and study. Web sites of all descriptions provide easy access to
text and sound and both the moving and still image. There are hundreds of
thousands of blogs of practitioners at all levels that give a very personal take
on subjects and insight into the most current processes and methodologies.

I would suggest at this point that you seek out information from a range
of sources. Trawling the Internet could return some very useful stuff, but
the Internet is not the only source, and I would like to make a plea here for
a varied approach to research and varied reference material that includes
online references but also includes real-life observation, DVDs, and good
old-fashioned topics. There is a considerable range of texts that will assist you
in your efforts. You will find work of the very highest quality from all manner
of experts; this work has undergone some form of editing, verification, and
mediation. Unfortunately, that's not always the case with material you find on
the Internet.
Creating Your Own Reference Library
This is my call to all serious students of animation to create their own
collection of references, their own library of information, research, films, stills,
and drawings. The beauty of this kind of collection is that it could contain
different types of material in different formats, both digital material and hard
copies. Making your own reference resource can be very valuable. It will
consist of the very things you are interested in and will be directly related to
your very particular and individual practice. In time it will perhaps provide you
