of production. Each frame of stopframe animation is a unique record of a
unique event, and once the model is moved to a new position, it is difficult
to exactly replicate that previous position. Unlike CG animation or tradition
2D animation, with stopframe there is no lingering artifact—a drawing or
separate data file among which it is easy to insert additional drawings or files.
Once stopframe animation is done, it's done. Any errors and you are probably
going to have to reshoot the entire thing.
Of course, it is perfectly possible for the animator to practice the shot or
elements of the shot before undertaking the animation proper. I am sure that
such practice efforts will be repaid in the form of better-quality animation, but
this process will be much more time consuming because it will probably be
impossible for the test animation to be incorporated into the final sequence.
I suppose that one additional benefit of making test animation with a puppet
is to test the capabilities of the model itself, identifying the movement it will
allow and how far the animator can manipulate it without it either breaking or
looking implausible.
Whatever form your animation practice takes, from the simplest low-tech
forms to the most advanced and complex processes, the analysis of action will
help you improve your skills. The ability to analyze action does not depend on
technology or process. Undertaking thorough action analysis will provide you
with a good understanding of timing and dynamics, transferable skills that
will last a lifetime and on which you can build for a lifetime in animation.
