In-Depth Information
Marey. You'll find more about these in the chapter on the study of motion.
The origins of digital motion capture began with the scientific use of motion-
tracking technology, developed in the 1970s and 1980s. This was undertaken
as part of research into biomechanics, for much the same purposes as Marey's
early devices. Since the first development of digital motion capture there
have been many applications of this technology, including military, scientific,
medical, sports, and other uses, to gain accurate information and create equally
accurate simulations. Motion capture allows us to analyze the movement of
humans and animals, which is very useful in assessing the performance of
athletes and analyzing the gaits of animals. Given the cost of thoroughbred
horses, capturing and analyzing their actions and thus assessing their potential
could make a great deal of difference to their value as breeding stock.
