In-Depth Information
the development and execution of their particular craft. Creative drawing
can be used as part of the exploration of the imagination, the testing of ideas
and concepts, and the investigation of techniques and processes. Creative
drawing may present options and design solutions in a broader design
context or be an end in itself, with the drawing becoming the artifact of the
creative endeavor.
Academic drawing is a process that aims to investigate, analyze, and describe
a subject by recording aspects of what is seen. It depends on direct first-
hand observation. Drawing undertaken in this manner will assist in the
development of skills, both practical and observational, that may then be
used to underpin other creative efforts while extending the animator's
knowledge and understanding of the subject matter.
It would be a big mistake to consider life drawing as simply being useful to
artists who use drawing as part of their practice. I have seen many young
students and aspiring computer animators make this mistake and neglect
drawing as a way of developing observational and action analysis skills, only
to regret it later. Life drawing, or should I say drawing from life, provides
all practitioners with the opportunity to observe the way things are, not
simply the way things are imagined to be, and to develop a keen ability for
observation that will then aid visualization.
FIG 7.5 Drawing is not necessarily about making beautiful drawings, it allows one to observe more closely a
subject and to see things otherwise missed.
