In-Depth Information
Other than the human face, the hands are the most expressive part of the
human body. For an animator creating performance-based animation, the
study of the hands may also provide an insight into the character, personality,
and temperament of a character.
Facial Movement
The range of facial movements that humans are capable of making allows for
an intricate pattern of visual communication in addition to the vocalization
skills we possess. Many of these signifiers transcend linguistic or cultural
differences. We are able perhaps to express our emotional state more than any
other animal, though this ability to communicate through facial expressions is
something we share with our primate cousins. This has been covered at some
length in the chapter on action in performance and acting. We will therefore
limit the text at this point to cover the range of facial motion and the muscles
of the face.
